McLaren MP4-12C is quick… Really quick

Yesterday, McLaren set their latest machine out to lay down some new performance benchmarks.  Engineers at Ferrari and Lamborghini will not be happy.   The new supercar is even faster than the iconic F1.

The 12C does 0-62mph (100km/h) in 3.1 seconds with the optional performance tyre pack, and reaches 124mph (200km/h) in 8.9 seconds – half a second quicker than the F1.

The F1 was capable of a top speed of 243mph (392km/h), whereas the 12C is tops out at 205mph (329km/h), so the 90s classic still holds onto that at least, but considering the 12C costs less than half of what the F1 did when first released leads me to believe that not too many people are going to mind the top speed difference.

The 12C has the Ferrari 458 Italia square in its sights, and when you compare the two cars, you can see that the McLaren definitely has the edge.  The 12C sports a twin turbo 3.8-litre V8 engine that develops 595bhp at 7,000rpm; whereas the Italia puts out 570bhp at 9,000rpm from its 4.5-litre V8.

The 12C also happens to weigh 50kg lighter than the Ferrari at 1,434kg, which means it has a power-to-weight ratio of 455bhp per ton – beating the Italia again.

The braking power behind the 12C is also impressive: 62mph (100kn/h) to 0 in just 100ft (62 metres).
